A two-day series of events titled Designer Genes: Genetic Technologies and the De-selection of Queer Bodies was held in early May at the New York City LGBT Community Center. The series included an invitational briefing for LGBT organizations; a public symposium with scholar-activists CGS Project Director Patricia Berne, Nancy Ordover, Marsha Darling, and David Serlin; and a half-day intensive workshop.

The Designer Genes events were co-sponsored by the Causes in Common / NYC LGBT Community Center; the Center for Genetics and Society; and the Committee on Women, Population and the Environment. They were endorsed by the New York Association for Gender Rights Advocacy, and supported in part by the Astraea Foundation.
