A new kit for pregnant women, already being sold and marketed in the United States, claims to be able to tell the sex of the fetus as early as five weeks of pregnancy. Many observers are concerned that it will be used for sex selection.

Researchers in the United Kingdom have "coaxed" human embryonic stem cells into the early cells which later form eggs and sperm. This is considered a key step towards producing artificial sperm and eggs.
