New Zealand Legislation

Genetic Crossroads
December 2nd, 2004

New Zealand passes Human Assisted Reproductive Technology bill and releases draft guidelines for PGD:The new law bans reproductive and research cloning and inheritable genetic modification. Policy on other procedures, including PGD, is delegated to an ethics committee. Earlier, the National Ethics Committee on Assisted Human Reproduction released draft guidelines that would ban PGD for so-called "non-medical" purposes, included sex selection for social reasons. But the Office of the Children's Commissioner expressed concern that, as written, the guidelines would "devalue" disabled children.
