30-Oct. 1, London: "First Annual Conference on Ethics, Science
and Moral Philosophy of Assisted Human Reproduction"
This Royal Society event is intended to debate "the moral,
legal and social issues arising from new applications of reproductive
technology." But most of the featured speakers, including John
Robertson, Gregory Stock, John Harris, Yury Verlinsky, and Julian
Savulescu, are widely known as supporters of eugenic technologies,
as are conference organizers Robert Edwards and Edgar Dahl.
12-13, Washington: "Guidelines for Human Embryonic Stem Cell
Research: A Public Workshop"
A recently established committee of the National Academies' Board
on Life Sciences is hosting this event. While principles for responsible
stem cell research are urgently needed to protect the public interest,
committees of scientists and bioethicists similar to this one have
functioned in recent years to assuage public concerns about controversial
research, without establishing meaningful oversight or regulation.
