Medical Gene Transfer Arguments Pro and Con

Attempts to modify genes in somatic cells (cells other than eggs and sperm) are currently in clinical trials.

Argument for: If perfected, this procedure could have important medical applications.

Argument against: Unless carefully regulated, this procedure could be used to try to "enhance" human beings in ways that would be socially undesirable.

Comment: Somatic gene transfer should be used for valid medical applications, not for "enhancement."
