A group of self-proclaimed liberal, pro-choice leaders held a press conference Tuesday to influence the Senate's votes on an anti-cloning bill.

The Center for Genetics and Society has gathered about 100 signatures on a letter to the Senate, speaking out against reproductive cloning, as well as cloning for research purposes.


Members of the group believe their take on therapeutic cloning -- the kind of cloning that would be done for research purposes -- is unique. In their letter they favor a moratorium rather than a permanent ban.


"We represent a fundamentally new perspective," said Marcy Darnovsky, associate executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society.


The issue has revolved around the argument of when life begins. President Bush and other conservative legislators are against therapeutic cloning because they believe an embryo is a human being with the same rights as anyone.


But members of the Center for Genetics and Society believe they can cross both religious and party lines with their recommendation of a moratorium instead of an outright ban on therapeutic cloning.
