The Stowers Institute for Medical Researchmay not locate its multi-billion dollar expansion in Missouri after all. Last fall, the Institute's threat to locate its new campus in Kansas was seized upon by proponents of stem cell and cloning research initiative in Missouri. After a record-setting $30 million campaign, most of which came from the founders of Stowers, Missourians barely passed a constitutional amendment to protect cloning-based stem cell research - even though it's never been performed there and was not truly under threat. Although Stowers officials cite a hostile climate in the state's capital towards embryonic stem cell research, with a constitutional amendment in place, the threat now is negligible and exaggerated.
