Pet owners in Dubai can now store stem cells of their favourite animals and get them reused at a later stage for regenerative purposes in cases of injury or sickness.

Speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday, Dr Kamal Khazanehdari, head of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL), which is offering the service, said, "Though we are currently focusing on the performing horses, we'll later include falcons, racing camels, dogs and other animals."

Yesterday, CVRL announced its tie-up with Vet-Stem, a research laboratory based in California, US, which has given Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG) of CVRL the exclusive rights to the proprietary stem cell technology that provides storage of stem cells and makes it available for being injected back into the injured animal.

MBG will provide the stem cells services for regeneration and healing of tendon and ligament injuries and avoids the normal scarring process.
