Rather than proudly taking the child home from the hospital, Mrs Savage has now had to hand him over to another woman - the heartbreaking result of an IVF mix-up which saw her implanted with the wrong embryo.

Mrs Savage had carried the baby almost to full term, before undergoing a caesarean section at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Centre in Toledo on Thursday.

Mrs Savage and her husband Sean announced the birth late on Friday night. In a remarkable act of generosity the couple, who were giving up their hopes of having a fourth child, offered their "heartfelt congratulations" to the baby's biological parents, Paul and Shannon Morell of Michigan.

"We wish Paul, Shannon, their twin girls and their new baby boy the best, as they move forward with their lives together," they added before admitting that their family was going through "a very difficult time".
