Supermarket giant, Asda has announced it will sell the drugs without making a profit in order to help women with the huge costs of fertility treatment.

The drugs, which are available only on prescription, boost the ovaries to produce eggs and can be used alone or as part of IVF treatment.

Fertility treatment is expensive for those who do not qualify for NHS funding and a cycle of IVF can cost around £8,000 including drugs.

Asda Pharmacy will charge £1,171.41 for drugs to accompany one IVF cycle, saving up to £820 compared with other high street pharmacies, it claimed.

Currently 71 per cent of NHS primary care trusts (PCTs) offer one or two free IVF treatment cycles, with thousands of women going on to pay for at least one more cycle.
