The Biotechnology Industry Organization spent almost $2 million in the third quarter as it lobbied Congress, the White House, and more than a dozen federal agencies on topics including funding and patent laws.

The group trimmed its spending from $2.1 million a year ago. It also spent about $2 million in the second quarter.

Its interests included funding for biofuels projects, funding for the Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emergency preparedness programs, defense from bioterror attacks, patent regulations, renewable fuels, Medicaid rates, investment rules, and tax credits. It also discussed laws on animal cloning and labeling with European Union regulators.

BIO says it represents more than 1,100 companies in industries including health care and agriculture.
