Even in industry's Mecca, stem-cell proposition gets chilly reception

A state proposition that would provide billions in funding for stem-cell research would seem to be a safe bet in the birthplace of the biotechnology industry.
But state Proposition 71 is receiving an unexpectedly cool reception from some major players in the local biotech and health industries, even though many companies here stand to gain millions in research dollars if it passes on Nov. 2.

"As people are really getting into the nuts and bolts of this issue, they are seeing problems with it," said Dr. Max Green of the San Mateo County Medical Association. "They may support stem-cell research, but they don't see this as the best way to go about it."

The situation has created an unusual political alliance for Green: He describes himself as left-leaning and pro-abortion, but he is on the same side of 71 as right-leaning religious groups that disapprove of harvesting embryos for stem cells.
