Two groups that support all types of stem cell research are urging voters to oppose a state initiative that would make $3 billion available for the science.

The California Nurses Association and the Center for Genetics and Society say Proposition 71 doesn't provide enough oversight of how taxpayer funds would be spent.

Nurses association President Deborah Burger said Proposition 71 would funnel taxpayer money to the same drug companies that don't make flu vaccine because it's not profitable enough.

If the nascent science does lead to cures for some of society's most devastating diseases, Burger said, the association fears the therapies produced by drug companies would be available only to the wealthy few who can afford them, and not the millions of Americans without health insurance.

"We had hoped we could support Proposition 71," Burger said. "But the more we talked to (its supporters) . . . we realized that if we didn't come out against it we would be neglecting our patient advocacy role, especially for women," Burger said.
